Strengthening Families

The family of origin is the best environment for a child to grow up in. Through our locally tailored family strengthening services, we support vulnerable families to stay together. This enables children at risk of losing family care to continue to grow up in a family environment conducive to their development with a close relative or guardian. We work directly with families and communities to help them protect and care for their children effectively, in collaboration with local authorities and other service providers.

The target group consists of children at risk of losing parental care or children who have lost parental care and can live with guardians.

SOS Children’s Villages supports participants in the following ways :

  • Ensure that families have access to essential services for their children: responding to children’s needs and development (material, educational, health, psychosocial support, etc.).
  • Help families build their capacity to protect and care for their children: support caregivers in developing their knowledge and skills, and provide them with a stable source of income.
  • Strengthen support systems for vulnerable children and their families within the community: support community members so that they are able to organize themselves and provide sustainable responses to the needs of vulnerable children and families. After a period of three to five years, when the family has acquired all the knowledge necessary to provide quality care for the child and, thanks to microcredit, the guardian has been able to engage in an income-generating activity that enables them to meet their children’s basic needs, the family leaves the program.
