Replacement Coverage

Replacement Care, which targets children who have completely lost parental care and have no other recourse, is implemented in several ways:

  • At the SOS Children’s Village

Children who have completely lost parental care can find a caregiver, new brothers and sisters, a new family, and a community worthy of children in the SOS Children’s Village. Every year, an individual assessment (placement review) is conducted for each child to identify their specific needs, which may vary depending on age, gender, and experiences during separation. Placement reviews allow us to ensure that the support we provide to children is necessary and appropriate in order to offer the best option in their best interests. Children and young people participate in development and employability initiatives according to their potential and in their best interests. Young people become independent at around the age of 23, depending on the case.

  • In biological families

Thanks to regular placement reviews and following a rigorous assessment of the child’s situation and that of their family, when the conditions are right, the child is reintegrated into their biological family. Depending on the needs of the child or young person, SOS Children’s Villages continues to support them for a year before withdrawing. Further follow-up is provided by the.

  • In foster families

Foster families are an alternative care option implemented by the government and SOS Children’s Villages. Families are recruited and trained by these two stakeholders, who entrust them with children; families receive a symbolic financial contribution for caring for the children. If you are interested in the opportunity to care for children without adequate parental care, please contact the Social Promotion Center in your municipality or the nearest SOS Children’s Village.

Among the first children who grew up in SOS Children’s Villages in Benin, there are now carpenters, doctors, agricultural engineers, plumbers, hairdressers, customs officers, bankers, lawyers, human resources managers, glaziers, etc.
